Traction Alopecia

Traction Alopecia

Traction Alopecia is a form of alopecia caused by rubbing/pressure being applied to the scalp or tension on the hair shafts.

It is most commonly seen in people who:

  • wear their hair in particularly tight hairbands;
  • wear hair clips regularly; or
  • have dreadlocks, tight braids, or other similar styles.

Hair extensions can also cause traction alopecia, due to the tension created on the hairs from the bonding of the extension. It can also be caused by tightly fitted hats or helmets, such as a motorbike helmet, which see frequent use.

The repeated and regular trauma to the hair follicles can cause permanent damage, meaning that the hair loss will be non-reversible. This can lead to scarring alopecia if the damage to the scalp causes scar tissue which prevents hair regrowth. Wigs or hair transplants are the only option if there is scarring as topical solutions will have no effect.

Hairoom can advise on any kind of traction alopecia.
